two in a gondola are being designed by Elena Pavlou.
Born in Nicosia at a time in which the island was going through tremendous multicultural changes, she acquires a broad spectrum of perspectives.
In 1987 she studies fashion design in Academia Koefia in Rome. Her challenge is to mix contradictional elements, such as high fashion details in prκt a porter and in 1989 she wins the first prize of Linea Pelle, among young designers, all over Italy. A year after, she participates in the biennale of young artists in Marseille, with a collection inspired by Greek traditional costume.
She starts designing costumes for the theatre and cinema. Famous actresses, like Valeria Golino and Ina Geerts wear her clothes.
In 2002 she starts designing collection, naming it ‘‘two in a gondola’’, after a dusty old record.
A parade of figures like Elizabeth Taylor wearing the Queen’s crown, a horse rider holding a rope of pearls, cats and foxes giving their outline shapes to bizarre tops, have given a humorous feel to clothes that are not ment for those who take fashion seriously!
Elena Pavlou’s thoughts:
Nothing in particular…I was always interested in bizarre shapes and textures
Since I was little ,I liked to build human figures out of clay…I found the structure of the human body amazing!!. It was very tempting to create new unconventional shapes to dress my dolls and create new haircuts …my interventions though, were not always so successfu
My educational background is my life experience!!
I have graduated from the academia Koefia of haute couture in Rome
I worked in the film business and theatre ,a fact that influenced my work…I prefer to call my self costume designer rather than fashion designer. Each one of us chooses to wear a specific social costume that enables him/her to communicate with others of the same attitude. I personally, I find it very challenging to dress the woman that does not go by the rules, but she has strong instincts. My target group is the woman who never gets old ,but is always evolving ! Once I sold the same dress to a 18 years old girl , and to a 60 years old woman.
My inspiration comes from anything that has shape , smell, and color!…I catch the mood of the moment, and then I search for things that will stimulate my imagination. One I was inspired by the wrinkles that my shar pei dog has on her face!
My favorite designer is Margiela.
If someone wants to make a living out of fashion, he needs more than one talent. Besides the fresh ideas in designing and the knowhow, he has to succeed in fulfilling the needs and demands of his target market. Last but not least. he has to be an excellent marketer!
The mood of my summer collection 2009 was based on a street art on a wall, that gave me quite a shock !!! ! Two skeletons, a boy and a girl, kissing!
I made a collection of contradictions!
T shirt skeleton print, with lace sleeves, agressive details, in silky fabrics,
haute couture shapes in cotton tops, glossy and mat, structured and fluid! The color pallet is rather monochromatic, cold greys and blues, pale yellow and water melon ,with some flashes of fluo fuchia and orange.
A good collection is the one has a distinctive character , and all pieces match each other.
I think the fashion industry has entered a phase that has to reevaluate some principles.
Customers have become clever buyers and very demanding concerning quality versus price…
Two in a gondola collection is available in DNA, Kinky, Flexy and other selected boutiques across Europe.
